Choosing the right glass type
Your decision will consider cost, privacy, style, clarity and ongoing maintenance. Here we break it down for you in simple terms.
1. Clear Glass (Standard Glass)
What it is: Regular toughened glass which has a slight green tint in certain lights and angles due to the iron content within the glass
Look and Feel:
Fully transparent with very good clarity when properly cleaned
Slight green edge (more noticeable on thick glass or white tiles)
Smooth on both sides
✅ Pros:
Cheapest and most popular option
Makes the bathroom feel bigger and more open than frosted or fluted options
Shows off tiles/features
❌ Cons:
Shows water spots, soap scum easily
No privacy
Greens off more with age
Best for: Modern bathrooms where budget and spaciousness are the priorities and you’re okay with regular cleaning.
2. Ultra Clear (Low-Iron Glass)
What it is: A premium version delivering super clear glass because the iron is removed during processing → no green tint
Look and Feel:
Crystal clear, almost invisible
True colour of tiles and fittings comes through
Smooth on both sides
✅ Pros:
High-end, luxury almost invisible finish
Brighter, cleaner aesthetic showing off true colours
Perfect for light/white bathrooms
❌ Cons:
More expensive
No privacy
Still shows marks like standard clear glass
Best for: Designer bathrooms or when you have invested in tiles/tapware you want to showcase.
👉 Simple rule:If your tiles are light or white → low-iron glass creates a noticable difference and is worth it If dark → standard clear glass is usually fine
3. Frosted / Acid-Etched Glass
What it is: Glass whereby one side is treated with acid to create a permanent matte etched finish. The untreated smooth side is installed facing into the shower.
Look & feel:
Soft, milky / satin appearance
Green tint with standard glass and a blue tint in low iron glass
Blurs shapes but still lets light through
Smooth on one side and a slight etched (rough) feel on the other
✅ Pros:
Good privacy
Diffuses light nicely
Hides water marks and soap scum better than clear
❌ Cons:
Slightly more expensive than clear
Not 100% consistent. Expect minor natural variations/defects in the finish
Can still show oils/handprints (less than clear)
Best for: Shared bathrooms, outdoor showers or where modesty matters without making the space feel closed in.
4. Fluted (Narrow Reeded Glass)
What it is: Glass (usually low iron) with vertical or horizontal grooves (ribbed texture) that distort visibility and create a textured look and can work with light in interesting ways.
Look & feel:
Textured, architectural
Blurs shapes while still letting light through
Deep ribs on the outside surface and smooth on the inside of shower
✅ Pros:
Good privacy without going “opaque”
Very on-trend and modern style
Hides water spots and fingerprints well
Can create lovely light patterns
❌ Cons:
Slightly harder to clean in the grooves however grooves are installed on the outside of the shower
Significantly more expensive than standard clear glass
Best for: Stylish bathrooms where you want a feature + privacy + style.
